Coloring For All Seasons - Spring

Coloring books, specifically adult coloring books, are currently all the rage. I was browsing the book section at a big box store the other day & there was a massive section full of very nice coloring books with various themes. If you search online, you will find tons of free coloring pages. However, if you don't have access to a printer or want a unique gift for someone, a coloring book is the way to go.

I recently received Coloring For All Seasons - Spring, a beautiful coloring book from Greenleaf Book Group, for review. It is a wonderful book full of magical Spring illustrations perfect for celebrating the season of rebirth. There are many claims that coloring is a wonderful way to relax & unwind. According to the book's description on Amazon, by concentrating on specific patterns and hues, coloring can unlock creative potential and help alleviate stress. Sounds good to me...and it's a lot cheaper than therapy! So grab a copy so you too can ‪#‎ColorAndChill‬

GIVEAWAY: BraveMouse Books

BraveMouse Books is a small book publisher that creates magical books that children AND adults will love! These terrific readers are all available in English, with some available in Spanish, French, Arabic, German, Hindi, Italian, Mandarin, and Portugese. It is fascinating to see how the lovable creatures featured in the books are created by hand. The video below shows how children's book author & illustrator Molly Coxe creates a character & then shoots photos of miniature sets as she works on Wet Hen: A Short Vowel Adventure.

I am in awe of Molly's talent in creating these stories & characters, including Benjamin Middlemouse, Sir Pouncealot, and Posie Pantrymouse. These fun adventures are sure to hold the attention of the little ones while entertaining the ones reading the stories to them. Another great thing about these early readers is that the phonics focus is designed to help beginning readers build skills & confidence. Rat Attack highlights the “short a” sound and Princess Pig is filled with “short i’s”.

One of the missions of BraveMouse Books is to encourage children to see themselves as creators, and to help them share that creativity with others. This is so perfectly in line with what we at Funky Finds believe that it's as if a partnership between us was inevitable! The BraveMouse Books website includes a blog full of great information, as well as a great project showing how to make your own mouse. This page features a printable and video instructions for creating mouse heroes (or villains) using simple household items.

GIVEAWAY: The Story Keeper by Lisa Wingate

In January 2012, I met a new-to-me author named Lisa Wingate at an author event in Jefferson, Texas. She was very nice, friendly & approachable - and interested in learning more about Funky Finds. That always makes people instantly awesome in my book! I purchased her book Dandelion Summer & instantly became a fan. I continued reading her books & have loved each one that I've read.

Based in Waco, Texas, Lisa writes great book after great book. This year alone, The Prayer Box, one of my absolute favorites, has been shortlisted for several book awards AND she recently signed a film option on one of her books!

This summer I was fortunate enough to be part of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Book. Readers throughout the country were assigned to a circle and, at a designated time, received one of twenty advanced copies of The Story Keeper, Lisa's newest book. We were to read the book within a two week period & write our comments in the book as we went along. I have never written in a book as I read, but it was a great experience! I loved reading the other readers' comments & including my thoughts.

Here's a quick synopsis of The Story Keeper: When successful New York editor Jen Gibbs discovers a decaying slush-pile manuscript on her desk, she has no idea that the story of Sarra, a young mixed-race woman trapped in Appalachia at the turn of the twentieth century, will both take her on a journey and change her forever. Happy with her life in the city, and at the top of her career with a new job at Vida House Publishing, Jen has left her Appalachian past and twisted family ties far behind. But the search for the rest of the manuscript, and Jen's suspicions about the identity of its unnamed author, will draw her into a mystery that leads back to the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains . . . and quite possibly through the doors she thought she had closed forever.

This book is a wonderful tale of guilt, healing, dealing with the past & moving forward that gripped me from the start. I did not want the book to end because I enjoyed it so much! I highly recommend this fantastic tale to anyone & everyone. And I am pleased to announce that one lucky reader will receive a free signed copy of The Story Keeper!!!

*** GIVEAWAY - Closed - Congrats Vera Godley! ***

PRIZE: One lucky winner will receive a signed copy of The Story Keeper.

GIVEAWAY: Claudine Hellmuth Printables

When I entered the wonderful world of blogging eight years ago, one of the first artists I connected with online was the talented Claudine Hellmuth. I have been a fan of her whimsical artwork & illustrations since first discovering her work. As noted on Claudine's website, she combines her drawings with happy patterns to create retro-whimsical artworks. Her unique work has been featured on Martha Stewart's show Martha, the Home Shopping Network, HGTV, and more. She has also published a number of creative books & DVDs, as well as her own line of craft supplies!

Claudine started out creating unique paper dolls & artwork featuring photographs that were then illustrated to depict fun & funky scenes. As with most artists, Claudine's work has evolved over the years & she recently began offering custom-designed printables that can be downloaded instantly. The printable artwork is designed in such a way that you can cut them out & easily turn them into three dimensional gift card holders, gift boxes, party favor boxes & more!

The best part is that you can create something totally unique without having to leave your home! I absolutely love the retro cassette tape gift card holder and the retro oven treat box is adorable! Another favorite of mine is the retro camper available in yellow, blue, green and pink. Each kit includes written instructions, as well as links to how-to videos with handy assembly tips & ideas making the creative process painless!

SWAG (Stuff We All Get)

Many craft shows offer swag bags as a way to attract shoppers & create excitement. If you are not familiar with swag, it stands for Stuff We All Get and is primarily used by business owners to promote their business. At Funky Finds events, we giveaway swag bags in conjunction with the charitable raffle. The bags are always good quality & include promo items from event participants, as well as other business owners.

As a business owner, you may have wondered what promo items receive the best response from shoppers. In my experience, a piece of paper or business card alone does not garner a strong response. Yes, the recipient may keep it or look at it when they get home. But most times, that piece of paper ends up in the garbage can.

We believe that your swag should relate back to you, your products, and your specialty. For example, if you create pottery or ceramics, your swag could be a simple little clay ornament or hand-made button. Something the recipient can use in their own crafting endeavors.

Recipients also seem to appreciate goodies they can actually use, such as a keychain or change pouch. Of course, you should certainly include your business card with any type of swag so the recipient can visit your website or contact you in the future. The whole point of swag is to promote your business!

While researching craft show swag online, we came across a variety of ideas. One crafter said they had attached their business card to a seed packet. One jewelry designer had the idea to contribute jewelry cleaning cloths. Another said she had given out candy ring pops with her business card attached to the ring band. This got a good response, but really only made sense because she in facts sells jewelry.

Even if you only have a business card, try to include something else with it. The item doesn't have to be overly elaborate, just something little, like a button or felt shape that could be used in crafting.

We strongly encourage all businesses to include swag / promo items when given the chance at events. It shows you are serious about promoting your business & that you jump on the opportunity to do so when it's available. Just be sure to put some thought into what you're contributing & don't be afraid to get creative!

Ray Koshy, Leaf Artist

Rajan (Ray) Koshy is a leaf artist and curator of the Rice Straw Museum in Galveston, Texas. All of his unique artwork is created using leaves of rice plants & cottonwood trees. Rice straw art is an ancient & endangered form of leaf art practiced by less than 100 artists around the world & Ray is the only rice straw artist in the USA. Rice Straw Museum is dedicated to Preserve, Protect and Promote this ancient leaf art from extinction and introduce this beautiful unique art to more and more people every day. Rice straw art uses only natural things in its creation like leaves of rice straw, leaves of cottonwood trees, gum arabic (tree sap) as the glue, and no color paint or dye is added to the natural color of the dried leaves of the rice plant.

The portraits, such as A Girl & Her Horse, are stunning intricate works of art. The American Indian Chief portrait is another show stopper. And I am absolutely in love with the beautiful Nativity leaves (pictured) that are perfect for the holidays! If you'd like to learn more about Ray & his work, his website is full of great information including a newspaper article that appeared in the Dallas Morning News. Also, he is offering Funky Finds fans BUY ONE, GET ONE FREE! Simply convo Ray after making a purchase & mention Funky Finds to receive an additional leaf art free of charge.

Sacchetto features unique accessories by Edward Bach who says the company was created as a result of boredom, frustration & unemployment. Inspired by horror films, pop culture and Mexican folk art, Edward's hand-painted bags are functional works of art. If you're looking for something even more unique, Edward also offers hand-painted cigar box purses, as well as light up t-shirts.
