GIVEAWAY: Pom-Poms!

Quirk Books has been publishing unique reads since 2002 with a line-up includes books in the following categories - crafts, fiction, food & drink, games & sports, home & garden, humor, pets, pop culture, and more. I have previously reviewed the awesome book Craft-a-day by Sarah Goldschadt featuring 365 simple handmade projects. Now I am thrilled to have the opportunity to review & give away two copies of Pom-Poms! by Sarah Goldschadt & Lexi Walters Wright featuring 25 awesomely fluffy projects!!!

I love the aesthetics of this book. It is so colorful & the size is very manageable (7.5"x8"). Many of us remember making pom-poms as a kid for various craft projects. Pom-Poms! provides a modern take on a simple craft that can make a bold statement. While the book does instruct the reader on how to create pom-poms with several different techniques, the meat of the book is composed of projects in which you can use pom-poms. The first section features projects that are for the home with the first project showing how to make a flower bouquet.

The additional sections feature projects you can wear, as well as projects perfect for parties followed by pom-pom 101, materials, wrappable methods, wrapping & trimming styles, and more. One of my favorite aspects of this book is that it shows how to make pom-poms out of various materials, including yarn, coffee filters, tulle, fabric, felt, tinsel, cupcake liners, twine, and more. Obviously, the sky is the limit when it comes to creating fabulously funky pom-poms!!! Joe and I had tons of fun creating a pom-pom garland to go with our Christmas decor (pictured).

On the Quirk Books website, you will find exclusive content showing how to create a glitter pom-pom ornament using cupcake liners. The site also features affordable apps for the Craft-A-Day project (summer, spring, fall AND winter editions), and more! Odds are they also offer a book that's perfect for someone on your holiday shopping list. And the Pom-Poms! book is super affordable at just $14.95. It truly is a go-to resource for crafters, DIY fashionistas, party planners, parents and kids, and anyone who finds delight in these cool, colorful, and insanely cute balls of fluff.

*** GIVEAWAY - Closed - Congrats to Jess & AmbreRose! ***

PRIZE: Two lucky winners will receive a copy of Pom-Poms!

TO ENTER: Leave a comment on this post noting why you would like to receive this book (for you or as a gift)?

EXTRA ENTRY (optional): Follow Quirk Books on Facebook, then leave a comment on this post noting you have done so.

Charity Report - Funky Finds Event

The Funky Finds Holiday Shopping Experience was a success!
And, as always, it flew by in a flash! Over the next few weeks, I will be highlighting some of the fabulously funky artisans that participated in the event. In the meantime, I wanted to provide a charity report from the event.

Ten dogs were adopted at the event which allowed The Humane Society of North Texas to raise $600.00 ($60 per dog).
Attendees also gave cash contributions totaling $237.00.

The charitable raffle raised $1,504.00. We split that money evenly between HSNT and Toys For Tots.

Attendees & vendors donated four large boxes full of toys for
Toys For Tots & donated $360.00 in cash!

We raised an additional $618.00 through event tee sales at the event for HSNT! Many thanks to event sponsor Quackerbox Creations, Ltd. for donating the shirts & printing at cost.

This was the first Funky Finds event in which Cowtown Loves Animal Shelter Pets (CLASP) participated. We allowed them to set up at the event & sell some of the hand-crafted items made by volunteers & they raised $623.00 for their organization!

Don't Forget to Feed Me was another charitable organization at the event & they collected 250 pounds of pet food & raised $1,100.00.

All in all that is $5,042.00 raised for local charities! Thanks to all who donated raffle prizes, swag items, bought raffle tickets & donated to these terrific groups.

Please visit the Funky Finds Facebook page to see
photos from the event.

Petticoats on the Prairie

Joe and I recently trekked out to West Texas, where I am originally from, and attended a wonderful event called Petticoats on the Prairie. I have wanted to attend one of these events for quite some time & we were lucky enough to squeeze in a quick family visit along with attending the event held in Colorado City, Texas. I don't think people around the world, as well as many Texans, realize how vastly different the landscape throughout Texas is or how quickly it changes. We drove from the Piney Woods of East Texas, which is lush with trees, through the Metroplex (lush with concrete & traffic), to West Texas featuring mesquite & wind turbines, finally to arrive in the cotton-dotted Western Plains (ie: so flat you feel you can see for 100+ miles)! As a born & bred Texan, it still blows me away to see the different landscapes. (photo from Petticoats on the Prairie Facebook page)

We opted to attend the event on Friday & arrived right at noon when general shopping began. I am glad we did as I have a feeling it was slim pickings come Saturday! The event was held at the Mitchell Co. Fairgrounds which seemed to me to be the perfect setting for this event that had a strong Western flair. The vendors sold a wide variety of things that included hand-crafted items, vintage & new items. We saw so many gorgeous displays throughout. I wanted to highlight a few of the many terrific vendors we had the pleasure of meeting. (That's me on the right; Joe down below)

Outside near the entrance was an Airstream trailer that the Rhinestone Gypsie's Vagabond Boutique started out in. These ladies offer a wide variety of on-trend clothing in sizes small to 3X which is pretty rare. They offer a number of Texas-based artisans' jewelry, art & other treasures. It's so wonderful to see women entrepreneurs helping out other female business owners! They have two store-front locations in Texas (Merkel and Abilene), but also sell online through their website & Facebook.

Joe & I were both drawn to Old Sole Boot Company. They offer high-quality vintage boots for both men & women & there were some real beauties for sale! We also loved the hand-crafted custom furniture offered by Canon's Custom Furniture. Cody Canon is a real talent when it comes to hand-crafting gorgeous sturdy pieces. Basement Creations, featuring unique jewelry & accessories, had a great set up. I loved her bright creations & really appreciated that everything was displayed in such a way that it was easy to view each piece. I also loved the beautiful children's goods created by Espee Trading Co. out of Midland, Texas. The luxury nap mats looked so comfy & I LOVED the quilted bronc! Texas Trash and Treasures was also a definite funky find. This couple's whimsical art pieces looked to be a hit with many customers. And I couldn't resist purchasing the Monkey Farts soap by Made to Lather!

If we had to pick our favorites though, Joe's would definitely be In a Pickle Foods based out of Fort Worth. I don't know how we haven't come across these delectable treats before, but thankfully we discovered them at Petticoats! I was busy shopping at the booth next to In a Pickle so I didn't get to sample all the goodies, but Joe purchased the Sweet & Spicy Pickle Chips and the Bread & Butter Pickle Chips. Both are DELICIOUS!!! Joe has been rationing them out & is already talking about getting more!

(photo from the In A Pickle Foods website)

While Joe was taste testing 'til his heart was content, I was sniffing away at the Screen Door Vintage booth. Austin-based friends Charity & Jen (pictured) offer a wide variety of scented candles in various vintage containers. I loved their products because, hey, everyone loves a candle, right? And also because once the candle is used up, you are left with an adorable vintage container that can be repurposed. The duo had created a special scent aptly named Colorado City that smelled like Autumn which I loved! Screen Door Vintage also has a Facebook page with more info & photos.

Thank you to the wonderful event organizers & all the talented vendors who set up at Petticoats on the Prairie!
We had a delightful time in West Texas!!!

GIVEAWAY: Kast Concrete

Kast Concrete features concrete knobs created by Grey Hensey, a full-time furniture designer in Atlanta. The knobs are cast in rubber molds resulting in a smooth finish. Grey was quoted in the Wall Street Journal saying, "Everyone is using raw materials like metal, wood and concrete, but by creating a glassy look, I'm trying to expand people's perceptions of what concrete can be. It doesn't have to look like a sidewalk, it can be delicate and refined."

According to Kast Concrete's ScoutMob Shoppe, Grey's endeavors started with a simple project in school, designing and making concrete tiles. But Grey became fascinated with the utilitarian material and began experimenting with concrete, perhaps a little obsessively.

Kast Concrete makes a straight-forward commitment that I believe we can all get behind.

Kast Concrete is committed to modernizing timeless design, through exquisite concrete decor.

Kast Concrete is committed to its unique customers, through timely, friendly service.

Kast Concrete is committed to American handmade, through each 'hand-kast' product.

Kast Concrete is committed to the planet, through concrete recycling.

Sounds pretty great, doesn't it!? Check out the four styles of knobs Grey is currently offering, each available in your choice of light grey or charcoal color.

GIVEAWAY: Weekend Kits

Weekend Kits has been a longtime funky find! Over the years, Weekend Kits has continued to offer quality craft kits that cover many categories & appeal to crafters of all ages & skill sets. The biggest benefit of purchasing through Weekend Kits is that all the supplies can be found on one site versus wasting time driving around to multiple stores hunting for project supplies.

The new items section is a perfect example of the versatility & selection the site offers. There is a great selection of jewelry making kits for kids, as well as multiple quilt kits for beginners to name just a few. Weekend Kits also offers a large selection of Sublime Stitching embroidery patterns and plush animal sewing kits which I love! (Pictured: Klutz - Jewelry Making Kit for Kids - Dot Jewelry)

And, while it may seem way too early to start thinking about holiday crafting, December is less than six months away. This means that there is no better time than the present to start working on holiday projects. Thankfully, Weekend Kits makes it a bit easier with the numerous Christmas Craft Kits, such as the stocking kits and card making kits. (Pictured: Felt Pillow Kit - Christmas Craft - Colorful Tree)

I think it is so important to encourage the creativity in children. Weekend Kits makes it easy to provide youngsters with all the tools they need to complete a great project. The Beaded Bands Bracelet Kit by Klutz Jewelry is one of the site's best sellers. Order one today...and while you're at it, treat yourself to a project kit, too! Happy crafting everyone!!!

Quirk Books Entertains Your Kids

I have written about Quirk Books a few times in the past as they publish a variety of unique books, including modern craft books. It is summer here in the States, which means there are lots of kids at home needing to be entertained! Regardless of the time of year or school calendar, it's always nice to find activities that kids (and parents) enjoy. With that in mind, Quirk Books has released a free fun sampler with excerpts from a number of their cooking, crafting, and parenting books, chock full of fun summer activities. There are 39 fun-filled pages featuring activities such as Little-Bitty Fudge Puppies and How to Keep a Family Happy During Car Trips. I have many fond memories of crafting & creating with my Granny using a thick craft book & supplies my aunt thoughtfully provided. So why not check it out & find a few activities to do with the kiddos? They are sure to enjoy a number of these activities! And, if you are unable to hang out all day & create, pass it along to the babysitter who is sure to be looking for ways to entertain the young-uns, as well!

Pinkalicious Prom & Vintage Show

Pinkalicious Prom & Vintage Show
Joe & Jessica (Me) • Embroidered Vest

Friday we hopped in the car & headed to Anna, Texas, for the Pinkalicious Prom & Vintage Show produced by Ashley of Texas Trash Jewelry! We thoroughly enjoyed the drive through Northeast Texas & scouted out several thrift stores we visited on our way home Saturday.

Joe and I had a blast dressing up for the prom!!! I didn't want to waste time waiting to see if I would be crowned Prom Queen, so I wore my own tiara. I also wore a thrifted denim vest that I had embroidered by Embroidery by Andrea. She embroidered a Texas & two pink pistols that I created on the back. I paired that with two vintage slips I layered, as well as my Cowgirl boots & I was ready to go. Joe scored a great vintage Western shirt at a nearby thrift store & paired it with his Cowboy hat & boots along with one of his Dad's bolo ties & belt buckle.

Pinkalicious Prom & Vintage Show
Ashely, the birthday girl! • Junk Ju Ju

Prior to the prom, we had the opportunity to do some Early Bird shopping. There were tons of great handmade & vintage vendors on-hand, including Texas Trash Jewelry, of course, Blossom Shop, Dee Dee Style, and more. It was a lot of fun seeing all the vendors dressed in their prom attire & they all had great set-ups.

pic3
Ashley & Jessica (Me) • Me with a lovely pink bike!

The weather was perfect allowing us to enjoy a fun-filled evening under the Texas stars. We enjoyed some Barn Red wine by Grayson Hills Winery & some great country tunes by the band. It was a wonderful opportunity to visit with some veteran Funky Finds vendors & meet some new folks. Also, the prom raised over $900 for the Anna Food Bank, too! Many thanks to Ashley for organizing such a wonderful event!

GIVEAWAY: The Silver Craftsman

We first met Sheldon Roy of The Silver Craftsman at the Funky Finds Holiday Shopping Experience in November (booth photo below). He's a personable & talented teenager with a strong support system (ie: his family & friends). Funky Finds events are a family effort, so we thoroughly enjoyed seeing a family who so obviously works together to create something special. The Silver Craftsman offers unique jewelry & accessories that are made using silver flatware. Amongst my favorites are the stamped silverware cuff bracelets (pictured) that can be customized. The silver napkin rings are also terrific!

March marks The Silver Craftsman's one year anniversary. Since beginning last Spring, Sheldon has added a variety of new products to his line that will be debuted at the 5th Annual Funky Finds Spring Fling next month. New items include earrings, a new bracelet style, wind chimes & wedding accessories.
