Kathy Magill, Artist

In 1986, artist Kathy Magill was introduced to watercolor & thatʼs all it took...she was hooked. She says, “Painting is a passion that allows me to express the joy I find in color.” Using almost exclusively a transparent watercolor method, Kathy's works are filled with luminosity & life. Her gallery is filled with beautiful portraits, landscapes, abstracts & more. I especially love Kathy's pet portraits like Sadie (pictured).

Kathy is also a founding member of Paint~Critique~Talk, an artist group that was created out of a need to paint with other artists for support & inspiration. All painters are invited to attend every Thursday, from 9am-4pm, at the Founder's Building on Main Street in Grapevine, TX. Attendance is free & open to adults only. If you have any questions, feel free to email Kathy at klmagill@verizon.net. (pictured: Mentler Model)

If you'd like to see her work in person, Kathy currently has a one-person show for the month of August at Buon Giorno Coffee House in Grapevine. Learn more about Kathy & her work on Facebook & LinkedIn.

Shelly Burden - Portrait Artist

Texas-based portrait artist Shelly Burden says, "Portraits evoke strong emotions; it’s what makes them challenging for artists to render but it’s what gives them their charm, makes them appealing to view. With that in mind, I paint realistic yet creative watercolor pet & animal portraits, as well as people in timeless tones of graphite; all of which show a close cropped 'all about the expression' image." I have had the pleasure of viewing Shelly's work in person & can tell you firsthand that it is fantastic! According to Shelly, her style pushes the watercolor medium past traditional flowing methods by encompassing sweeping & dry brush techniques, helping to achieve a true likeness of her subject.

If you are looking for a unique & thoughtful gift, Shelly accepts commissions of furry and non-furry subjects. Look through her online gallery & you will see that Shelly's detailed & captivating work truly stands apart from other artists. Even if you are not in the market to commission an original piece, Shelly has several products available that display her talents. I especially love the Quiet Times print (pictured above), as well as the art card featuring the parrot named Max. (pictured: O-Line)

When not painting portraits for clients, attending juried art shows & earning award placements, or selling her original works & printed products, Shelly can be found at local pet events booking pet portrait orders of which she donates a percentage to animal rescue. Through her summer art journaling camps & ongoing art classes, Shelly is pleased to be teaching artists of all ages the joy of artistic creativity. Being a self taught artist, with a career background in photo advertising, Shelly truly believes learning & attitude helps dictate our talents. Contact Shelly at shelly@shellyburden.com for information regarding classes & commissions. Mention you saw Shelly’s work on the Funky Finds blog and receive 10% off your order! Dreamin Bohemian

Dreamin Bohemian features Texas-based artist Adrienne Williamson's work. This wife & mother of three extraordinary boys (and the sweetest bulldog!) is extremely talented, as evident when browsing her work. I've had the pleasure of seeing Adrienne's work in person at the Funky Finds Spring Fling & it's all so vibrant & eye-catching. She says that while her style isn't always that trendy "bohemian" style most think of, it does encompass many different mediums & techniques. Having started crafting at the age of ten, over the years Adrienne began learning many different techniques, such as rug weaving, yarn spinning, mural painting & more. Now she says she finds herself painting on just about everything - denim clothing, furniture, glass, accessories & LOTS of shoes. She also started a children's line of nursery items & room decor that includes personalized "dream" pillows, quilts, blankies, bibs & burpies. These products make wonderful gifts that are made specifically for the special recipient. Adrienne most enjoys custom orders, so don't hesitate to contact her to discuss what you have in mind! In addition to the website, you can connect with & see more photos on Dreamin Bohemian's Facebook page. (pictured: Custom Painted Dragonfly Jeans for Girls)

Valentina Ramos, Artist

Valentina Ramos has been working as a graphic designer since 1994. She says that during her spare time she used to try almost any sort of artistic expression, such as doing craft works, painting, or drawing. But, over time, she's been switching from being a graphic & web designer to make a living out of what she most enjoys doing...making art. Her original artwork section is filled with stunning pieces that are so detailed it's unbelievable! I am an avid animal lover, so I love that Valentina's subjects are so often various animals. Some of her artwork is also available in the form of home decor items and fabrics. I would love to have a pink owl pillow! Visit Valentina's blog for more information & inspiration. I love what the home page of The Potter's Heart says about Laura Canfield’s experiences as a potter - that it has brought together her gifts in ministry & her love of clay & that she provides a space for people to connect to God and each other through the creation of art through pottery workshops. Take a look at her exceptional work & consider taking a lesson!

Yvonne Wilson is super funky gal that I always look forward to seeing. Her business, Yvonne4eyes Card & Art Manipulations, is a great source for hip cards, pendants & other cool items.

Hunky Dory

Diana Morrow is an artist and graphic designer who lives and works in Brooklyn, NY, along with two cats, one Cockatiel and a Chihuahua named Nigel. Her creativity is inspired by many things, but at the top of the list are traditional tattoo design, going antiquing & thrifing in search of mid-century modern finds, and the work of other artists including David Bowie, Cy Twombly, Elizabeth Peyton, and the Cocteau Twins. Diana has settled into a creative process that suits her best, combining collaged computer graphics and painting. Her Etsy shop, Hunky Dory by Diana Morrow, features original one-of-a-kind mixed media creations mounted on re-purposed vintage plaques. The result is a variety of unique pieces that will liven up any space! I love the piece titled Friends (pictured), as well as the vibrant Life on Mars. The piece titled Rainy is another personal favorite. Mention "Funky Finds Free Shipping" in the notes to seller to receive free shipping on all orders placed before December 25, 2010.

Yvonne4eyes

I have lots of positive things to say about Yvonne4eyes, a participant in The Funky Finds Experience, but for now I want to direct your attention to this fabulous Thanksgiving card. Only two weeks 'til Thanksgiving, so order now!

Original Youth - The $1 Challenge

Sarah Zamora of Original Youth is a Texas-based artist that we had the please of working with in March at The Funky Finds Spring Fling. Her artwork is terrific, she has a great outgoing personality, and she is very active in her community. That's why I wanted to share this video Sarah recently posted on YouTube and Facebook. Bravo TV is currently holding casting calls for the second season of their reality series "Work of Art: The Next Great Artist." Sarah is trying to raise enough funds for a plane ticket to New York City for the September 25th casting call to be held at Brooklyn Museum. Please watch her video and, if you feel compelled to help her out, donate a dollar or more to help Sarah go after her dream. Also, you can meet Sarah in person at The Funky Finds Experience in November! Her fabulous artwork is featured on the event website's homepage.

Grubby Mittz Art Co.

Stacy Zimmerman is another talented crafter & artist that has participated in previous Funky Finds events. Stacy began Grubby Mittz Art Co. in 2008 and her work is available for purchase through The Shops @ Funky Finds. Her products range from cool typewriter key rings to unique, hand-painted children's clothing. A talented artist, Stacy also creates artwork on other mediums, such as canvas. Her hand-painted silk scarves are also stunning. Visit Stacy's website for more information and updates.

Artist Krishala Burchill

Krishala Burchill is a London-born artist currently living in Switzerland. Both of her Etsy shops, Acacia's Gallery and sw19, feature Krishala's original artwork in various forms. You will find unique pendants, such as Serenity, that showcase prints of original works of art. Foggy day in Santiago is a beautiful and interesting art necklace, as well. Autumn Leaves, a colorful oil painting, was inspired by a park in the city of Geneva, Switzerland. My favorite piece, titled Vancouver, depicts a snowy cityscape much like what we're experiencing this time of year.

*GIVEAWAY - Closed: Krishala is giving away a print of any piece seen in her shops. To enter, simply visit Acacia's Gallery and/or sw19 and leave a comment on this post noting your favorite piece. Giveaway ends at Midnight EST, Tuesday, December 15.

Christine Berrie Illustration

Christine Berrie is a talented Glasgow-based illustrator. Her latest prints include '10 Camera Drawings' and '9 Robot Drawings' featuring collections of vintage cameras and retro robots. The pieces are arranged together to create colorful, detailed prints and are each limited to an edition of only 50. I love the blue Imperial Savoy Camera Drawing, as well as the red Sabre 620 Camera Drawing. Christine says she also loves drawing old buildings, gadgets, scooters, cars, signage, street scenes and anything that else inspires her to create detailed imagery with a touch of nostalgia. Her hope is that the results display her aim to invest even the most mundane objects with personality. I'd say mission accomplished. Learn more about Christine Berrie via her blog.

My Zoetrope

Michelle Cavigliano of My Zoetrope recently finished a special project entitled "Friends Forever." The Brooklyn-based artist created this series after feeling frustrated and sad from trying to keep in touch with good friends that she has made over the years. Michelle says she wanted to create a series that celebrates old friends, from grade school through college and through the last eight years of her life after college. Remember friendship bracelets from your childhood? And how about those wacky class reunions? All of these illustrations are also used to make up a 2010 wall calendar that is a wonderful celebration of friendship. Michelle offers lots of great, whimsical illustrations, including the Worried Carrot and Mister Whale.

Stephanie Levy

Artist Stephanie Levy is currently having a "Countdown to 100" sale. To date, she has made 91 sales through her Etsy shop. For the next nine sales - until her shop hits 100 sales - she will enclose a free print of the customer's choice with each purchase. Stephanie offers a great variety of artwork, including several autumn-inspired prints. And her new series of "floating" collages is inspired by places she has been or would like to visit. They are called "floating" because the panels are attached to small wooden supports on the back, which make them appear to "float" on the wall when hung. Everything in these collages is one of a kind and handmade, yet still quite affordable at $60-$85 USD. I love the Paris Wedding piece!

Marjorie Weiss

New York-based artist Marjorie Weiss creates vibrant & bold silhouette paintings. Her work, which has appeared in galleries throughout the United States and in Germany, has evolved over the years from “photo-realist” style to the graphic style seen here. Marjorie recently debuted several new greeting card designs that feature unique, intriguing and fun images. I love all the dog artwork, especially the Chihuahua. Our household is also blessed with a wonderful Yellow Labrador, and Marjorie has created a Yellow Dog profile card, as well. Her greeting card collection also includes artwork showcasing people and flowers that are beautiful.
